While we wait

Brooklyn-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Theo Haber returns with While we wait, his second full-length album on cmntx records, arriving June 6, 2025. Following the narrative-driven debut The Man From There (2023), Haber pivots toward a more intuitive, atmospheric approach—crafting soundscapes that emerge from improvisation, spatial resonance, and the quiet tension of everyday thresholds.

Written and recorded in a shared living room turned music sanctuary, While We Wait captures the spirit of spontaneous creation. Haber’s compositions often began in liminal moments—just before leaving the house, when a casual strum or synth line would evolve into a full piece. This organic process is central to the album’s emotional immediacy. “I always find myself drawn intensely to my instruments during those few moments of transition,” Haber reflects. “This record emerged out of winter stasis and the freedom to explore.”

A standout feature of the album is Haber’s homemade pipe organ—constructed from PVC pipes, computer fans, trash bags, and 3D-printed parts. This DIY instrument breathes through the corners of his apartment, creating immersive, droning harmonies that anchor tracks like “Salt” and “Tiers.” Microphones suspended from the ceiling capture the interplay of air and architecture, blending with subtle synths and sine waves to form a meditative sonic field.

The album’s lead single, “My old,” arrives May 7, followed by “Whims” on May 21. Both tracks offer glimpses into the album’s textured palette—balancing gentle dissonance with warmth and clarity. Haber cites Swedish composer Ellen Arkbro as a key influence, particularly her organ works which occupy large spaces for audience members to move through and experience changes in resonance. “Her process of creating organ harmonies in large spaces… was the seed for setting up my own DIY organ in the corners of my home,” Haber explains.

While The Man From There unfolded as a conceptual suite set in a fictional restaurant, While we wait trades linear narrative for emotional vignettes. Each track serves as a tableau—a fleeting mood, a sonic sketch of stillness or movement. The transition from “Take Your Time” into “Tiers” marks a personal highlight for Haber “It came together in a flow state as a synth improvisation that I ornamented with field recordings.”
