Remembering Mischa Falkenburg

We are extremely saddened to share that our friend Mischa Falkenburg (“Mis Chaf”) passed away last week at the age of 70. Mischa was an incredible composer and sonic explorer, and an even greater person.

Mischa was a lifelong musician and became interested in improvisation and tape experiments in college while working as a late-night radio DJ. He began crafting pieces through a process of layering: found sounds, improvisations, or even the same source layered against itself several times over. In Mischa’s words, “putting things together that weren’t”. The results were beautiful and compelling soundscapes.

Meeting Mischa was a very happy accident that resulted from a stray Google search a few years before we started the label, and we’d remained email pen pals since. We are proud to count his Vocal Explorations as one of our very first releases (catalog #002) and look forward to continuing to release from his treasure trove of an archive.

You can learn about Mischa’s rich musical history in our Expositions interview with him.

and: Hear Mischa’s music here.

We’ll miss you.
